Gwalior Enables the Disabled

Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh has a unique identity - it is a barrier-free and disabled friendly city. This is because of the efforts of its young district collector, P Narahari, who has made this one of his main focus areas.

To do this, an audit was done of all the public spaces in the city. Officials were encouraged to build ramps and railings within the infrastructure of these places. “Persons with disabilities, senior citizens, women, especially pregnant women, should not face any challenge in accessing public spaces - this has been our primary objective,” Mr. Narahari says.

To inspire government officials into following this mission, the collector held seminars for people associated with railways, bus stands, banks, schools, hospitals and hotels, and asked them to work towards making the city barrier-free.

Mr. Narahari faced some challenges while making this vision a reality. “There are some people who refuse to listen or take time to understand or believe or they think it is a general instruction and they don't need to follow it,” he says. To deal with this attitude, Mr. Narahari send them showcause notices and warned them about fines and punishments applicable if they did not comply. It was only after this was done, that they made changes in schools, colleges and hospitals.

Over the last two years, the administration has managed to make the district 95% barrier-free and all schools have been made 100% barrier-free. It has become an example for the whole country. “Through Satyamev Jayate's episode on persons with disabilities, there was sensitization about the issue,” says Mr. Narahari. “A lot of administrators like me were further sensitized by this show. And I believe that several administrators have now begun work in this field.”

Satyamev Jayate: Organic farming, need of the hour

Did you know that there are 67 types of pesticides which are banned all over the world, but are still used by Indian farmers. Everyday through fruits and vegetables, we consume 400-500 % more pesticides than the permissible limit. Aamir Khan highlighted the bad effects of chemical farming during the eighth episode of his television show ‘Satyamev Jayate’. He spoke to doctors, agricultural scientists, farmers and others during the episode.

To increase productivity, farmers have been using pesticides for agricultural purposes from years now. Because of this, the nutrition value of the crop goes down. Now, these pesticides have become a part of our food chain. According to a study by Dr Rashmi Sanghi, even breast milk contains 400-800% more pesticides than the permissible limits.

During the show, many farmers confessed that they do not use these pesticides for the fruits and vegetables they separately grow for their own consumption.

Satyamev Jayate: Organic farming, need of the hour

Jurnail Singh a farmer from Jajjal, Punjab claims that access use of pesticides started after the Green Revolution. He said that 45 people from his village have died of cancer in past few years. A train from Bhatinda to Bikaner is called ‘Cancer Train’ by the local people. The number of patients travelling to the cancer hospital in Bikaner is increasing fast.

Rajju Shroff is the managing director and chairman of India’s biggest pesticides company. Aamir was surprised to see his reaction on the show. He said, “People exaggerate about the bad effects of chemical farming to gain publicity.

Non-pesticides users have worse health state. If done in limit, pesticides cause no health problems. The productivity will highly suffer if we stop using pesticides and the farmers will commit suicide.” He also said that DDT is completely harmless.

Aamir tried to highlight the benefits of organic farming and alternate ways of killing insects during the show. From many years, agricultural scientist Dr GV Ramanjaneyulu has been working with the farmers in Andhra Pradesh to teach them cheap and safe ways of getting rid of the insects. He said, “Not pests, but pesticides are a bigger problem for the farmers. On an average, a village spends nearly Rs 50 lakh every year on pesticides.”

Aamir Khan also spoke to Pawan Chamling, chief minister of Sikkim on the show. Chamling has banned all pesticides in the state and is promoting organic farming. He aims to make Sikkim an organic state by 2015. It is not possible for all the states to switch to organic farming overnight, but taking some steps to save people’s life is essential now.

Through his show, Aamir urged audiences to opt for organic products. He also said that there should be a regulating body to monitor the usage of pesticides by the farmers.

As reports claim, the TRPs of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ have started dropping. Is this an indication that Indian audiences only prefer entertainment on small screen? Share your comments on the eighth episode of ‘Satyamev Jayate’.

Satyamev Jayate - Aamir Goes 'LOL'!

Newspapers have often explained the presence of insecticides and pesticides on our food and its effect on humans in the long run. The infamous 'rail farms' of Mumbai - farms located alongside railway tracks where food is grown using drain water - has often made it to top news in our papers. However, not much is done in this regard. Until now! The eighth episode of Satyamev Jayate shall hopefully change things around as it created a tremendous impact with the startling facts and reports. Definitely one of the most hard-hitting episodes of Satyamev Jayate!

The jolt comes in the beginning itself when Dr Rashmi Sanghi revealed that the poisonous endosulfan was present in breast milk of certain mothers and that too, believe it or not, 800% more than the permissible limit! Obviously, the toxins made their way into the mother's body through the food she consumed - fruits, vegetables, food grains etc - which is deemed 'nutritious'! If the consumers are suffering, what about the farmers who grow these crops and also live near their farms? Aamir Khan then exposed the problems faced by inhabitants at Kasargod, Kerela where pesticides was sprayed on crops for 25 long years resulting in some of the most shocking cases among the inhabitants. Children were born with deformed limbs, eyes, cerebral palsy etc while the others suffered from chronic diseases, regular miscarriages (some women reportedly suffered it as many as 10 times) and even cancer. The culprit - endosulfan.

In the northern part of the country, a passenger train runs from Bhatinda, Punjab to Bikaner, Rajasthan and is regularly boarded by sick farmers affected by the use of pesticides and who get cheap treatment in Rajasthan. Majority of the victims suffer from cancer and hence the name 'Cancer Train'. Both these instances have been widely reported by newspapers across the country but sadly didn't make an impact at all on governments and general public.

Many farmers that were interviewed revealed that they don't use any toxins on a portion of farm land and use the food grown there for themselves and their families! The rest of the production, where toxins were sprayed, is sold to the dealers which make their way to our markets! A question that arises is - how will we protect the crops and plantations from pests if pesticides are not sprayed on them? How will our productivity increase, especially when our population is growing day by day? This was also echoed by Rajju Shroff who runs United Phosphorus Ltd, the largest pesticide company in India. However, he went on to claim that pesticide is indispensible and without its use, farmers might even commit suicide! He made many more such claims, which led Aamir to break into an unexpected guffaw, the first in these eight episodes! Also, this was the first time that disagreement cropped up between guests on the shows and even argued to prove their point.

Shroff's points were obviously baseless and this was expected since he ran the biggest pesticide establishment and couldn't speak against its use. However, Aamir wonderfully proved that our food can be grown sans harmful toxins. Dr G V Ramanjaneyelu from Hyderabad explained his work in villages of Andhra Pradesh wherein crops were successfully grown without pesticides. The pesticides cost a bomb but Dr Ramanjaneyelu's Non-Pesticide Management (NPM) products cost as little as Rs 5-15! Towards the north-east, the state of Sikkim has put a ban on the pesticides and is in many ways the 'first organic state of the country'. In both Andhra Pradesh and Sikkim, productivity didn't suffer. Same goes for Kasargod, where endosulfan was banned in 2000 after which, production remained the same and health problems among the inhabitants too subsided.

Sadly, awareness about NPM is negligible in our country. Subsidies need to be implemented on organic farming and use of insecticides need to be stopped on an immediate basis. There's anyways enough stress and other kinds of pollution that is harming us. We don't want our foods to be harmful as well. Let's all raise a voice!

Aamir Khan's Satyamev Jayate speaks about organic farming

Agricuture plays an important role in every nation. What happens when this life saving food turns a treat to people? Aamir Khan's Satyamev Jayate's 8th episode, which was aired today dealt about the adverse effect of using pesticide on peoples health and environment in India.

The show aired a documentary on how a village in Kerala got affected because of using this pesticide in farming. It was shocking to know that these chemicals poisons even mother's milk. Based on a brief research, it is said that women and the newly born children are mainly affected by these harmful pesticides. Aamir interviewed a scientist from Andhra Pradesh who had successfully implemented organic farming in a village, which had created a revolution among the farmer in Andhra. Aamir also said that government should give more support for these farmers to implement organic farming. The actor also said that it is the duty of every citizen to buy those products to lead a healthy life. The show also highlighted that India is the number one nation, in exporting food products through organic farming. Hope, through this show farmers will adapt organic farming and save our nation

Will this show also create a new revolution in our agricultural system? Let us wait for a good cause.
